Laura Keeley ’11 writes about Duke sports for the Raleigh, N.C., News & Observer

It has been 35 years since Melissa Ludtke, a reporter for Sports Illustrated, and her editors filed a civil rights lawsuit after she was barred from entering the New York Yankees locker room to conduct interviews during the 1977 World Series. A court decision in Ludtke’s favor opened the door for women sports reporters to do their jobs, but women are still in the minority when it comes to sports writing and editing jobs.

Patton Callaway, the student employee of the Office of External Relations, interviewed four former staffers who turned their Chronicle experience into careers in sports writing, and asked them about making their way in a male-dominated profession. || Read more

Since graduating from Duke in 2003, Greg Veis has written for top-shelf magazines and been an editor at GQ and The New York Times Magazine. Last June he left The Times for The New Republic, where he helped the 98-year-old publication undertake a major redesign. In an interview with The Chronicle’s Director of External Affairs David Rice, Veis discussed the new TNR, how his Chronicle connections have helped him build his career, and the artfulness of magazine making. || Read more

The Chronicle staff elected sophomore Danielle Muoio to serve as editor-in-chief of its 109th volume.

In a staff-wide election Friday evening, Muoio, currently a Health and Science editor, was appointed editor of The Chronicle and president of the Duke Student Publishing Company, Inc., which publishes the independent student-run daily newspaper. She will succeed junior Yeshwanth Kandimalla for a one-year term beginning in May. || Read more
